WHAT MAKES THE 18TH BIRTHDAY SPECIAL?
The 18th birthday is a big one. Teenagers look forward to turning 18 from the time they become a teen.
Turning 18 really is a big deal on many levels. It is the highway to adulthood. When teens turn 18 they become an adult in the eyes of the law and this can be a good thing and a bad thing!!
Being 18 years old allows them to vote, own property, get married, be drafted and also be charged as an adult in crimes!!
I wish every teen started acting like an adult when they turned 18 but that is rarely the case, LOL. Nevertheless, turning 18 is a BIG deal and should be celebrated in a fun way.
20 FUN 18TH BIRTHDAY PARTY IDEAS
I like planning parties that work for guys or girls. This reduced a lot of stress for me as a parent. I put my thinking cap on and came up with some really awesome 18th birthday party ideas that I hope will make the day extra special for your loved one.
CASINO NIGHT BIRTHDAY PARTY
In some places, you can legally gamble when you turn 18 years old. Hosting a casino night birthday party at your home or in a rented space is a fun way to celebrate without the risk of losing all your money!
You can plan a casino night party easily. There are many businesses that rent table games and can even send “dealers” out to your party to help you run the games. Partygoers can play with fake money so that everyone wins in the end.
If you want to use real money for your party I suggest everyone play with pennies. The key is to have fun!
To make the party more personal you can order personalized photo playing cards with pictures of the birthday guy or gal.
MOVIE NIGHT BIRTHDAY PARTY
I know, I know…a movie party is not that exciting. BUT…what if you rented out the theater for JUST YOUR PARTY? Now that would be awesome!
This isn't feasible to do in a huge theater in a big city, but it is an option if you look at the local theaters in smaller communities. Many times they will be willing to rent you the theater for a set amount to have a party during the day or very late at night after their regular shows are done.
You could ask to see whatever is currently playing or they may be able to get a throwback movie that is something the birthday guy or gal loved as a kid. Everyone is loving retro movies these days.
To make the party top-notch be sure to offer the guests drinks and popcorn! This is one of those simple 18th birthday party ideas that every guest will enjoy.
ROLLER RINK BIRTHDAY PARTY
My oldest daughter just turned 18 and one thing she talked about was not wanting to have to “grow up”. A lot of teens still want to just be kids and have fun.
Rent out a local roller skating rink for a big bash. Invite as many friends and family as you can to come out and skate. If you want to do a theme for the skating party that would be fun as well.
Be sure to ask the roller rink to have some games for everyone to play to bring a little competition to the party. Playing the giant dice game and doing limbo on skates is always bound to bring some laughs.
A roller skating party is a great way to celebrate and still feel like a kid.
MURDER MYSTERY DINNER BIRTHDAY PARTY
My husband and I went to a delightful murder mystery dinner at an old-time bed and breakfast a few years ago. We had so much fun!
There are kits available now that allow you to have a murder mystery dinner party at your own home. This is a unique way to celebrate a birthday. It is a good party if your birthday girl or guy prefers a smaller group setting to celebrate.
Be sure to read through the kit in advance and plan the meal around the “era” of the mystery. Ask the guests to dress up in appropriate era attire to make it more fun.
If you don't want to do all the cooking yourself you can cater the meal.
SPORTING EVENT BIRTHDAY PARTY
If the birthday person loves sports then a sporting event birthday party might be a good idea for them. Pick the sport based on time of year and their personal preference.
Buy group tickets so that a big group can attend the game. Make special signs to hold up so people know that someone is celebrating their 18th birthday.
It is also a great idea to contact the team well in advance and ask if there are any special arrangements that can be made to make the day even better. Sometimes at baseball games you can have the birthday guy throw out the first pitch. You may be able to get their picture on the big screen during the game, etc.
Don't forget to give the birthday man or women a new team jersey to wear to the game!
CHARITY THEMED BIRTHDAY PARTY
Many young people today are dedicated to making a difference in the world. They may prefer to have a party that is going to help someone else instead of it being all about them.
If your special birthday person has a cause that is dear to them then theme your party around that cause or charity. Some simple ideas would be to ask for charity donations instead of gifts. Plan a day of service and ask your friends to come out and volunteer a day with you for your birthday.
If the charity has an annual run or walk you could get a group together and do that for your party. There are so many ways to help a charity for your birthday and it would be a meaningful way to celebrate.
STARGAZING OR SPACE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Spending an evening under the stars would make for a memorable 18th birthday. Check with your local universities and ask their astronomy departments if they could do a party/demo for your special person and a small group of friends.
Many communities have clubs or groups with high powered telescopes that they would love to educate your group on. Get creative and ask around if this is something the birthday girl would like. You will be surprised how many amateur astronomers you will find who would want to help you out!
End the evening by giving the birthday person a certificate showing that you had a star named after them for their birthday!
KARAOKE BIRTHDAY PARTY
If you have singers in your crew a karaoke birthday party may be the ticket to fun. This party could take place at a venue or even in your home with a nice home karaoke machine.
The key to having fun is to offer a variety of music options and for everyone to loosen up and sing at the top of their lungs, LOL. Be sure to have plenty of snacks and drinks for the partygoers.
Let the birthday guy or gal get plenty of time in front of the mic!
PROGRESSIVE DINNER BIRTHDAY PARTY
Everyone loves to eat and teens are no exception. A progressive dinner birthday party is an interesting idea that may be totally new to your special person.
Talk to friends and family and get people set up to make the different dinner courses. Create a map of when and where the partygoers need to be and then get started eating!
It is nice to have a food theme for the party so it could be Italian, Mexican, Greek, etc. Most progressive dinners have at least 3 or 4 courses.
It would be extra special to have a gift waiting at each location for the birthday person.
CAMPING BIRTHDAY PARTY
Teens love to get outdoors and a camping birthday party would make them feel very grown-up. Pick a weekend and set the whole thing up for your birthday person. Invite some of their closest friends to camp out too.
Supply the food and drinks and maybe even some camping games! Don't forget to send along the bug spray. If your teen doesn't like camping then rent a camper and they can glamp for the weekend.
GAME SHOW BIRTHDAY PARTY
Planning a game show birthday party is easier then you think it will be thanks to the internet. There are many free games online that help you host a game show at home. We did Family Feud one year at a Christmas celebration and had a blast.
Pick a game show that all the teens will enjoy and don't forget to buy prizes! Depending on how long the game will take you may want to have several games to make a whole evening out of it.
SPA DAY BIRTHDAY PARTY
A spa day used to be something only females would be interested in. Those days are gone in my opinion. Guys enjoy being pampered as much as gals anymore.
A spa day birthday party could be done at home if you are on a budget or at an actual day spa if you have a little more wiggle room in your checkbook.
This will probably be a more intimate party with just a few close friends. You will need to schedule plenty of time in advance if you go to a day spa so that everyone can receive services at the same time.
This is a relaxing and wonderful way to spend your 18th birthday. It will definitely make the birthday guy or gal feel special to be pampered all day long!
SURVIVOR BIRTHDAY PARTY
A lot of young people grew up watching Survivor with their parents. How about throwing a survivor birthday party? This is a great way to include lots of friends and there will definitely be some laughing.
The party will have a beach type theme for sure and needs to have some fun games and competition. Check out these ideas for how to make this party extra special!
This party will take some preplanning and you will want to buy everyone t-shirts or at least bandanas to wear so teams can be represented!
If you have a survivor fan at home this will be a big hit! Some 18th birthday party ideas require a lot of upfront work but will create life-long memories and will be so worth it!
GO-KART BIRTHDAY PARTY
Teens and adults alike love go-karts. There is something exhilarating about driving those little vehicles. What if you rented out a go-kart track for an hour or two and threw your 18-year-old a birthday party right at the track?
This would be such a fun experience and everyone would have a blast! Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the birthday boy or girl cruising the track at top speeds. You might want to give them a Mario Kart t-shirt or hat to wear to the party!
INFLATABLES BIRTHDAY PARTY
My kids (even my adult kids) love inflatables. Who wouldn't love them? They are just plain fun. You don't have to be in elementary school to have an inflatables birthday party.
Rent some inflatables and throw a huge bash for your 18th birthday party. This is one of those 18th birthday party ideas that every guy or gal would love because they can feel like a kid for the day.
If you don't have the yard space for large inflatables you can always go to an indoor inflatable facility to have the party.
DANCE PARTY BIRTHDAY PARTY
I am not talking about just getting together and dancing. I am talking about inviting a big group of friends to take a real dance class together to celebrate the birthday person.
This could be belly dancing, cha cha lessons or even learning to do the old-fashioned waltz. Whatever the dance type it won't matter because the whole group will have a blast learning something new.
You may be able to find good deals on Groupon for dance lessons.
THEME PARK BIRTHDAY PARTY
I know that a group of 18-year-olds would love nothing more than heading off to a local theme party alone to celebrate someone's birthday. This would make them feel very adult!
Look for group ticket deals before you buy the tickets. Be sure the group gets there when they open so they can have the whole day for fun.
TRIVIA NIGHT BIRTHDAY PARTY
How about having a trivia night birthday party that is all about the birthday person and their interests. Write your own trivia questions and see how well the group really knows the birthday guy or gal. You can expand the fun to also having trivia questions about topics that the person loves like their favorite TV shows, movies, sports teams, etc.
Don't forget to have plenty of prizes available for the winners.
TRAMPOLINE PARK BIRTHDAY PARTY
Just like go-karts and inflatables, teens love trampolines. Trampoline parks are everywhere and it is a simple but fun way to celebrate a birthday.
Some locations offer specials like disco jumping, black lights, etc. You may even be able to rent out the whole location for your party if you want to invite a large crowd.
MOVIE MARATHON BIRTHDAY PARTY
If the birthday boy or girl prefers a low key indoor party try having a movie marathon party. Find out what some of their favorite movie or TV series are and invite friends over for a day and/or night watching party. It may last a full day or two depending on how many movies there are in the series!
Be sure to plan out some great eats for the party and have tons of snacks on-site for the hungry teens.
