The 2024 high school football season has jumped ahead to Week 2.
The Enquirer has you covered here for all the scores, big game updates and stories from your schools and rivals too. Week 2 sees the beginning of the nine weeks' worth of conference battles in the Greater Miami Conference and the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.
Several games were pushed from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. start times due to the heat. The holiday weekend will be warm, but the cooler fall nights will be on the horizon.
Friday, Aug. 30
Cincinnati Country Day 29, Blanchester 27
A touchdown in the dwindling seconds of the game kept Cincinnati Country Day’s regular season winning streak alive at 20 games. Trailing Blanchester 27-23, CCD quarterback Elijah Guttman rolled to his right and dumped a short pass to freshman Thomas Huckleby who followed his blockers 18 yards to the endzone with just 10 seconds left. Following a six-touchdown performance last week, running back Lee Thomas added three more for the Nighthawks and intercepted a pass on defense. Guttman was 13-23 passing for 247 yards and the touchdown to Huckleby.

Fairfield 33, Colerain 13
It is almost unthinkable after the decades of dominance that preceded it, but the Colerain Cardinals have lost 14-consecutive games overall, including an 11-game streak in GMC contests. The Cardinals cut an early Fairfield lead before the break, but failed to score again in the second half as Fairfield pulled away. Tyler George led Fairfield with his 120 yards on 15 rushes with a score. Indians quarterback Dominic Back was 9-14 for 97 yards and two scores. Fairfield also forced three fumbles on defense. Colerain quarterback Shawn Billups was 16-24 passing for 148 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a rush.

Moeller 42, Bishop Dwenger (Ind.) 18
Moeller’s lead was cut to 21-18 with five minutes left in the third quarter after a 49-yard pass from Nicholas O’Keefe to Brady O’Keefe. Not a problem for the Crusaders and quarterback Matt Ponatoski. With just a three-point advantage, Benjamin Rice scored a Moeller touchdown in the third quarter before the Crusaders scored twice in the final quarter on big passes from Ponatoski to Jovan Love and Matthew Fogler. Moeller as a team finished with 502 yards of offense. Ponatoski was 24-36 passing for 362 yards and four touchdowns. Fogler caught two of those touchdowns and had 97 yards for the night. Love, to go with his touchdown, returned three punts for a total of 111 yards, setting up the Crusaders on offense.

Roger Bacon quarterback Bubba Smart led the Spartans on the road at Western Hills while the defense shutout the Mustangs. Smart was 9-12 passing for 170 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. Six different Spartans caught passes, three of which scored. Jerome Smith rushed for a score and had 62 yards. Western Hills quarterback Omariee Beckley passed for 63 yards and rushed for 38 more. After a fumble, interception and turnover on downs on its first three possessions, Roger Bacon scored on its final seven drives, not including kneeling out the final four seconds of the first half.

Milford 38, Walnut Hills 0
All of Milford’s 38 points came in the first half and those scores came quickly. No Milford scoring drive took longer 2:54 and the longest drive of the day for Eagles was just under 10 minutes thanks to the second half running clock. Luke Brand connected with Caden Bailey on Milford’s first two drives and the game was already out of reach then. Brand was 9-12 passing for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Davis paced the Eagles with 139 rushing yards on 13 rushes with two scores. Bailey’s three receptions went for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Walnut Hills quarterback Will Rivers was 14-27 for 149 yards and an interception.

It may have been declared Kirk Herbstreit Day in Centerville, but the glory went to son Chase and the rest of the St. Xavier Bombers. St. Xavier was more than happy to keep the ball and the clock running as Herbstreit was an efficient 9-13 passing for 107 yards and a score but also rushed for 82 yards. Daniel Vollmer (who also threw one pass for a touchdown) ran five times for 61 yards and two scores. Jake Britt and Kobe Clapper caught receiving touchdowns. Centerville was just 1-11 on converting third downs for the game.

Harrison 35, East Central 28
A 22-game winning streak came to an end for East Central, the two-time defending Indiana state champions in Class 4A. The Harrison Wildcats put on a show in front of the home crowd, getting a turnover and then scoring the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute left in the game. With the defense closing in on Harrison quarterback Dickie Engel, he threw the ball up to Josh Addelsperger who caught the ball over his shoulder for the 27-yard touchdown and the victory. The game was tied on three occasions and neither team led by more than seven points for the entire game. Engel threw for 150 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 37 more yards and a score. Cole Koops rushed 25 times for 134 yards and a touchdown. Cohen Hering forced the fumble and Grant Dallio recovered to lead to the winning score.

Fenwick’s 7-0 lead came with 45 seconds left in the first half and was put in danger at the start of the fourth quarter when Talawanda scored on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Cale Leitch to Demetrius Morris-Williams. Talawanda failed to even the score with the missed point after, allowing Fenwick to seal the victory on a 24-yard completion from Micah O’Connor to Sean Heberling for the game’s third and final score. O’Connor completed just 4-10 passes, but half of those completions went for scores. Adam Rucker led the Falcons with 73 yards on the ground. For Talawanda, Leitch was 10-19 passing for 175 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Morris-Williams was responsible for four of those receptions and 138 yards. Patrick Keefer had 10 tackles, including three sacks for the Falcons.

Anderson 52, West Clermont 7
The Anderson Raptors are 2-0 after reaching the 50-point mark again, this time beating West Clermont in the conference opener. Anderson has scored 103 points through two games this year. Anderson led 45-0 at the break, including converting on all three attempted two-point tries. The Raptors had 474 yards of offense, most of which came in the passing game. Quarterback Justice Burnam was 18-21 for 275 yards and three touchdowns and Owen Scalf added 29 more yards and a score on three attempts. Trace Jallick was the main option, catching 8 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Durrell Turner led with six rushes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. For West Clermont, Landon Young had 120 yards on 20 rushes and Alexander Hauck intercepted Burnam.

Lakota East 20, Mason 13
Last season, Lakota East finished 1-9, beating only winless Colerain in Week 6 of the season. Two games into year two with head coach Jon Kitna has already seen improvement. The Thunderhawks welcomed Mason and pulled out the victory with some big runs from senior running back Chauncey Peck. Peck gave Lakota East a 7-0 lead in the first quarter which turned into a 7-6 halftime advantage after a pair of Comets field goals. Pinned deep early in the second half, Peck took a handoff and scrambled 98 yards for the score. A two-point try failed, but the Thunderhawks went ahead 20-6 less than two minutes later when Jamison Kitna connected with Jayden Seay from 35 yards out. Peck ended with 116 yards and two scores. Kitna was 7-15 for 138 yards and a touchdown. On defense for Lakota East, Cohen Reip had 16 tackles and four tackles for loss.

Princeton traveled to Sycamore and threw a touchdown party featuring seven different Vikings finding the endzone. Quarterback Deangelo Birch was 9-11 passing for 68 yards, finding Ryan O’Bryant and Landen Miree for scores. Four more Vikings scored on the ground, including Birch who opened the day with a five-yard run. Shelvon Hibbett picked up a fumble and ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Sycamore was held to 34 passing yards and an interception on 17 attempts an could only muster 56 yards on the ground as a team, never rushing for more than eight yards on a single run.

The Elder Panthers are 2-0 after sending visiting West Catholic back to Michigan with a 20-13 defeat. Sophom*ore quarterback Kaden Estep was 11-17 passing for 107 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown to Jackson Ruth in the first quarter. Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Maddox Arnold came through with two rushing scores in the second half, including the game’s final score with 7:30 left in the fourth. West Catholic managed just 178 yards of offense while Elder picked off quarterback Grady Augustyn twice. Along with his two scores, Arnold had nine tackles on defense.

In Week 1, Middletown Madison met Preble Shawnee, falling 52-0 to open the year. Less than a week later, the Mohawks swung the season into much better position. Middletown Madison traveled to Gamble Montessori and topped the Gators 57-0 in a shortened, two-quarter game. The Mohawks led 42-0 after the first quarter alone, all six touchdowns coming on rushing scores. The theme followed in the second quarter when Logan Mason scampered for his third touchdown run before an interception return from Zach Rumping. With a 57-0 deficit, the game was ended at the halftime break.

Last week, Walnut Hills beat Western Hills 30-6, snapping a 27-game losing streak. Ryle beat Covington Catholic for the first time since 2016. Boone County is already halfway to reaching its win total from last season.

The USA Today Network Ohio High School Football Super 25 poll is voted on by a panel of sports writers and editors from across Ohio. The poll ranks the top 25 teams in Ohio, regardless of division.
Massillon Washington edged Lakewood St. Edward for first place in the newest poll by just three points. Moeller is the top-ranked Cincinnati school in the poll.
