Oatmeal Cinnamon Waffles are the perfect way to start your morning breakfast. These waffles are a healthy alternative to cold cereal, and they are very filling. Sometimes on Saturday mornings, I just cannot wait to get out of bed and make oatmeal cinnamon waffles.

We make our own maple syrup or even buttermilk syrup. Don’t get me wrong, the buttermilk syrup tastes like caramel, and the oatmeal cinnamon waffles and the buttermilk syrup go together 100%! If you do not want to make the overnight breakfast casserole, you could always make oatmeal cinnamon waffles.

We always made our syrup growing up on the farm. The closest grocery store was 12 miles away, and so we learned to stock up and save. I also think that we learned to make some things on our own. Pancakes and waffles are a must on the farm, you need to eat something that is going to hold you over for a few hours.

And that is just what oatmeal cinnamon waffles do, they have some oatmeal in them, making it so that you can last for a good 4-5 hours. I also think that a waffle bar would be a great idea for a special occasion like Christmas morning or the day after Thanksgiving.

You can always have some neighbors over for dinner and cook up a batch of oatmeal cinnamon waffles. That way you do not have to spend the day or night slaving over a hot stove, and they can bring their favorite topping.

Cinnamon and oatmeal are two ingredients that my family really enjoys. They all love waffles, and this is a fun way to put those ingredients together. You will enjoy this twist to ordinary waffles.

When I was growing up, we had cooked cereal for breakfast every morning Monday through Friday. Saturday morning was special and we got waffles for breakfast every Saturday. We never really had a variety of waffles; just plain waffles, but they were good and we enjoyed the break from cooked cereal.

There were no pop out of the toaster waffles or anything like that. We did have Bisquick, but we didn’t use it that often. We usually just made the waffles from scratch. And we usually had just plain maple syrup that we made from scratch too, but sometimes we had chokecherry syrup that we made from the berries that we picked in our dry farm.

We never had syrup from a bottle that was purchased at the store. We would have loved these Oatmeal Cinnamon Waffles. I know that my family sure does. And the older I get, the more I love eating at home. I find that you can make amazing food at home and at half the cost!

Tips and Tricks For Oatmeal Cinnamon Waffles:

  • I like to put the dry ingredients in a bowl, and then I make a well in the center, then I put the wet ingredients in and whisk it all together with a whisk that is a little larger. It seems that the whisks where the wires are close together, causes the dough to get stuck in the whisk and it makes it hard to mix together.
  • Some ideas for a waffle bar, are: fresh fruit, your favorite syrup, chocolate chips, whipped cream or Reddi Wip. You could even use the same things that you would use on a banana split.
  • You could also put some fresh or frozen blueberries in the batter.
  • Don’t forget the Nutella!

Love, love love and true confessions – I’ve now made these two days in a row for two separate groups of people. I added a generous 3/4 cup oats (regular rolled oats as I did not have quick oats) plus 1/2 cup buckwheat and then for the one group 1 cup of regular flour and for the other group 1 cup of gluten free. I also added dried cherries and chopped up walnuts. Fantastic! This recipe is a keeper – thank you!

I was looking for a recipe to try with the cute little Dash wafflemaker that I had, and I came across this. I was hoping it would be a big success and it most certainly was! Thinking of making another batch and storing them in the freezer for quick breakfasts for the kids. Planning to pop them in the toaster and see if that works.

What does baking soda do in waffles? ›

Pancakes and waffles typically both contain baking soda, which causes them to rise. As soon as the baking soda is combined with the wet ingredients (which contain an acidic ingredient, like often buttermilk), it starts producing carbon dioxide gas bubbles that cause the batter to rise.

What makes waffles gummy? ›

The solution: Many waffle batters are too thin, which results in a disappointing, gummy-textured waffle with a dry, unappealing interior. We found a thick batter lets the outside of the waffle become crisp while the inside remains custardy. We also determined that buttermilk is absolutely crucial.

Should you let waffle batter rest? ›

Recommended overnight or 2 hr resting – for the tastiest waffles, rest the batter overnight in the fridge or for at least 2 hours. This makes the flour grains absorb the liquid so it makes the inside of the waffles softer.

How do you keep waffles crisp while making more? ›

Here are some other ways to keep the sogginess at bay:
  1. Place your waffles on a cooling rack in a low-heat oven (don't stack the waffles on top of each other).
  2. Throw your waffles in a toaster to refresh their crispiness.
  3. Make sure your waffle iron is very hot.

What is the best flour to use for waffles? ›

On the flip side, waffles aren't as flaky-delicate as baked goods, making pastry flour too fine for the job. Good old AP, or all-purpose, flour is where it's at. If you want to sprinkle in a tablespoon or two of buckwheat or rye flour for added nutty heft, go for it.

Why add egg to waffle mix? ›

Egg: Adds tenderness and provides structure. See our tips in the recipe for making even lighter, fluffier waffles by whipping the egg white (totally optional).

What does cream of tartar do in waffles? ›

Adding a small amount of cream of tartar when you're beating egg whites—usually 1/8 teaspoon per egg white—speeds up the creation of foam and helps stabilize the structure of those minuscule air bubbles you're whipping up.

Why are my homemade waffles not crispy? ›

Bake Them in the Oven for That Crisp Finish

Just remember to place them directly on the oven rack so the steam can escape. If you use a sheet pan, the steam will stay trapped and your airy and crisp waffle will go limp and soggy. A true tragedy when you're so close to breakfast!

What makes waffles taste so good? ›

Baking powder and baking soda: Help our waffles rise and brown. I recommend using both for the best waffles. Sugar, salt, and vanilla extract: Make our waffles taste amazing. I keep the sugar amount low since I love pouring maple syrup on top, but you can increase the sugar for sweeter waffles.
