What are Pasta Chips?

This internet sensation is made by pre-boiling pasta, seasoning them with spices and herbs before deep-frying, baking, or air-frying them. I choose to either bake or air-fry to make them healthier. But, regardless of how they are cooked, they will turn out perfectly crunchy with a smidgeon of noodle chew. Aside from it being deliciously addicting and so easy to make, all the ingredients that you need are basic pantry items. So, you can make it anytime you are craving a tasty but healthier treat.

Ingredients used

  • Pasta: I used two types of pasta to try this out – farfalle and rigatoni. I like them because of their fun shapes and playful appearance. However, any type of short pasta would work nicely. You can try penne, fusilli, tortellini, or macaroni.
  • Italian herbs: Oregano, basil, and thyme are perfect for this recipe. You can also add rosemary or marjoram too. Or, you can have fun by experimenting with different herbs you have on hand!
  • Other seasonings: On top of the herbs I used to flavor the pasta, I also added garlic powder, paprika powder, salt, and pepper. However, feel free to get creative here by using other spices!
  • Vegan parmesan: gives the pasta a cheesy, salty flavor! As an alternative, you can also use nutritional yeast.
  • Olive Oil: this helps the seasoning and herbs to stick to the pasta and the chips get brown and crispy in the air fryer or oven.

Step 2: Bake until crispy!

Now spread the pasta on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, making sure they are not overlapping or touching each other, and bake at 392°F (200°C) for 17-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Alternatively, cook in a preheated air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 10-12 minutes, shaking halfway.

Tips for making crispy pasta chips

  • Check the package instruction and cook the pasta until just al dente. Do not overcook or they won’t crisp up well.
  • Make sure to properly drain the pasta before adding the oil and seasonings. This will ensure that the seasoning sticks and the pasta will turn out more flavorful and crisp.
  • Use only as much as oil as needed. The beauty of these air fryer or baked pasta chips is how little oil is required making them healthier than deep-frying.
  • Do not overcrowd your air fryer or baking sheet with pasta chips. Depending on the size, you can cook in batches. If using an oven, make sure the pasta has enough room between them to cook evenly.
  • You may have to adjust the cooking and baking time depending on the pasta size and shape you will use. Make sure to let them cool down to further crisp up before serving.

Can I deep-fry them?

Absolutely! You may make pasta chips in a deep fryer or a pot with oil. Drain the pasta thoroughly before tossing it with your seasonings. Fry them for 1-2 minutes in heated oil, or until golden and crisp.

How to make Pasta Chips Gluten-free?

Simply swap regular pasta with brown rice pasta, corn pasta, chickpea pasta, quinoa pasta, or any gluten-free pasta brand you like. As always, I advise you to follow the package information when cooking them.

How to store Pasta?

  • Leftover Pasta Chips: This snack is best enjoyed fresh off the air-fryer or oven. Eating them at a later time may not give you the same crispness. If you have any fried or baked leftover pasta chips, make sure they are completely cooled down before placing them in an airtight container or sealed jar. It should be good for at least 2-3 days.
  • Cooked/Boiled Pasta: If you are cooking the pasta ahead of time, drain and combine with seasonings and oil. Then refrigerate for up to five days in an airtight container.
  • Uncooked pasta: Dry, uncooked pasta can be stored for up to one year in a cool, dry area like your cupboard. Dry pasta should be stored in an airtight box or container to maintain its freshness. Labeling your stored pasta would be very helpful to know which should be cooked first.
